SALUDOS DE MÉXICO III
I have placed myself behind the proverbial eight ball many times in my lifetime by standing up for people or groups that have been unjustifiably accused. It has always existed, this indiscriminate, unthinking and uncaring pointing of fingers without a shred of evidence. I understand there may be reasons that have evolved from past history or occurrences that a person may arrive at a certain conclusion particularly if they were personally involved or affected at the time. But the situation only deteriorates when everyone “assumes” the statements to be true when, in fact, they have absolutely nothing to substantiate their claims. Parroting of said claim only perpetuates, exaggerates and in most cases causes irrevocable damage.
Where am I going with all this? Well, I guess, like everyone else, this attack on the U. S. has had a more deep-rooted effect on me that I realized. Like most Americans, I have been guilty of indifference to the workings and politics of the country, having been too self-involved with my own personal interests. It is a sad state of affairs when it takes such a tragedy to wake up to reality. What other country in the world could dole out several billions of dollars to bolster the airlines and city of New York especially after such a crippling blow to the financial sector. This is to say nothing of the never ending monies required to finance military efforts. I know of no other place where such a feeling of security can be found.
The fact that I live in México has really made me more aware of the tremendous contrast between capabilities of the two countries. I have been a fervent follower of President Fox´s campaign for two years and since change here can have a definite effect on myself and other Americans, my interest certainly has not diminished. Fox is the one person that can make a difference for México if given half a chance.
Because of my penchant for defending the wrongly accused I was greatly saddened and at the same time angry when I heard and read statements from Méxicans saying the U. S. deserves what happened. I can not bring myself to believe that this is the general consensus for educated, thinking people. Understandably, I can sympathize with Méxicans when the U. S. attacked and tried to take over a good portion of their land and oil resources. I certainly do not condone any such aggressions by any country and that includes England, Spain, France Germany, Russia and a myriad of other countries. But harbouring such thoughts for years and years after the fact serves no end. The truth of the matter is that if México were to live this horrific experience that America is now experiencing, the U. S. would be the first to be there, yesterday, to assist, support and do whatever it takes to save the country just as they have done the world over. By |
