SALUDOS DE MEXICO
One would think that, alter 71 years of total domination by a political party that did whatever they felt like doing, stole, lied, fixed elections, even assassinated their opponents and felt they had the right to do so, people would be a little more aware of how much things have really changed since Fox took over the helm for this beautiful country. Of course, I have to remember that the “news” in the daily newspapers is not necessarily the way things really are. I can not help feeling that there still exists the old practice of reporters writing what some party or faction is paying them to write simply to create a negative atmosphere for all the efforts that Fox and his team are making. Anyone would have to be blind not to see the most of the headlines are negative.
No matter how well intentioned a person may be in his endeavors, if there is someone determined enough to proclaim an all-out “no to everything campaign” in order to undermine these good intentions, the end result has to be a very definite deterrent to the progress of any project. Then, the NO to everything constituents can stand up and say “He has not done anything he promised”. They make certain to shout it as loud and long as possible in order to make their case. These “leaders” should not have the right to represent the people for they do not have the general populace and the country´s welfare in mind.
What I have noticed of late is a very definite change in the attitude between the intellectual leaders of the parties in congress. There appears to be a more general consensus that they have to work together as much as possible if this country is to ever prosper and grow. This is a must and should be the thinking any intelligent, logical, honest person who is determined to make things work. The biggest obstacle is to re-establish the confidence of the general public who has been lied to for so many years by a totally rotten to the core way of doing business. It certainly will not happen overnight. As in any similar situation, to realize this transition, the proof is in the pudding. Fox and his team will have to dedicate themselves to this end tirelessly and from all indications they are doing just that regardless of all the negative publicity.
“There has been no change since Fox took over his position as president of Mexico”. How fast and easy it is to forget the past when it is convenient. If that were the real story, all opposition party members that noisily and openly make derogatory remarks against the present regime and especially against the President of the country would already be dead. The army would have annihilated the Zapatistas and there would never have been a march in the first place. I remember very well the attempt on Lily Tellez´s life a few short months before the presidential election for her insistence to get the truth from a corrupt judicial official.
These days one is able to speak out without fear of reprisal. This is the way of a true democracy. The problem, up to now with this new found liberty called Freedom of Speech, is that there is an extremely widespread practice of said Freedom without any regard to respect for another person. I can not help thinking the reaction is that of a large group of children gone berserk in a candy store while the owner is out.
There are many dissidents and opponents of any change still lingering in the shadows of opposition and it is only logical that to realize all the goals necessary for the benefit of the country and its people, it will take years. By
